The benefits of yoga for children are to help build their physical strength, self-esteem, flexibility, muscle tone and alignment. Yoga helps regulate a child's emotions so they can realise their full potential. Specialised breathing exercises and deep relaxation methods improve concentration, respiratory function and reduce hyperactivity, fear, stress and tension. It can help improve the quality of sleep.

Why I do this work

It's my life's joy to be of service to children with additional needs and their families. As a young child I grew up very close to a family with a child the same age as me and he had Autism. In my twenties alongside other creative pursuits I worked as a care support worker for children with Autism, then as a qualified yoga practitioner I was instinctively lead to train as a yoga practitioner for children with special needs. There have been obvious nudges along the way to let me know that this is the path I can call my work.

Certification and Connections

2009 Certified yoga teacher training completed

2011 certified with Special Yoga as a Special Yoga practitioner https://specialyoga.org.uk

2002 - 2009 - care support worker for children and adults with special needs.

2011 - current -I see children weekly for 1:1 yoga therapy at their homes and in their schools. I also co-facilitate yoga therapy groups in Bristol and Frome.

My son (aged 8) has ASD and dyspraxia and has been attending private 1:1 yoga sessions with Sophie Bolton for a little over a year now. As a result of his disabilities, he had very little body awareness and co-ordination which meant he had little or no interest or ability in any sport or physical activities. Yoga with Sophie has taught him many simple things, like how to relax and breathe properly (something many neuro-typical children take for granted) but in addition it has significantly assisted his fine and gross motor skills, balance, co-ordination and concentration. The 1:1 teaching has meant that he can do all of this at his own pace with no fear of being ‘the worst’ or ‘left behind’ and has given his a strong sense of achievement and self-belief. He looks forward to his weekly yoga sessions and now substitutes a school lesson for a yoga class and hopes to be a yoga teacher/palaeontologist ‘when he grows up’

Before Zak started Yoga, he used to be very anxious, he lacked focus and found it difficult to control his behaviour. I feel because of yoga Zak is much more relaxed, happier and he has more focus. Seeing him in Yoga, was a dream come true. I have never seen Zak so relaxed. I don't think I will ever stop his sessions, he is completely different child now. Zak comes home after his session so relaxed he look forwards to Wednesdays because of Yoga.
